Olympic News. The longstanding controversy over the individual showjumping medals in the 2004 Olympic Games has been settled. The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), the international governing body for equestrian sport, had disqualified gold medalist Cian O’Connor (Ireland) earlier this year because of a positive drug test on his horse, Waterford Crystal. On June 10, the FEI received official notice that O’Connor had waived his right to appeal, paving the way for the International Olympic Committee to redistribute the medals. Rodrigo Pessoa of Brazil and Chris Kappler of the United States moved up to Gold and Silver Medals respectively. Marco Kutscher and Montender 2 of Germany moved up to Bronze.

Economic Impact of the U.S. Horse Industry. According to a new study released by the American Horse Council (AHC), the United States horse industry contributes $39 billion in direct economic impact to the U.S. economy and supports 1.4 million jobs on a full-time basis. When indirect and induced spending are included, the industry’s economic impact increases to $102 billion. The study also estimates the U.S. horse population at 9.2 million.
USDF Breaks Ground at Kentucky Horse Park. The United States Dressage Federation held an official groundbreaking ceremony for its USDF National Education Center on June 22, 2005 at the Kentucky Horse Park. Founded in 1973, the United States Dressage Federation provides education, recognizes achievement and promotes the sport of dressage.

Williams Scores at USEF National Grand Prix Dressage Championship. George Williams of Delaware, Ohio and his Westfalen mare Rocher, won the championship at the 2005 Collecting Gaits Farm/USEF National Grand Prix Dressage Championship on June 18. Arlene Page and Wild One finished second and Michael Barisone and Neruda were third.
